In the name of Allah The Most Gracious The Most Merciful.
May the peace and blessings of Allah subahanahu wa ta'aala be upon his last and final messenger(saw)
Asalamu alaykum (Peace be upon you)

Do Muslims believe in prophets.

In Islam believing in prophets is a tenant of faith meaning you cannot be a Muslim if you do not believe in any one of the prophets. The prophets all came with the same message of tauhid( worshipping Allah alone with no partners and no intercessors).

Why has God sent prophets?

Islam teaches that God has sent prophets to humanity, in different times and places, to communicate His message. Since the beginning of time, God has sent His guidance through these chosen people. They were human beings who taught the people around them about faith in One Almighty God, and how to walk on the path of righteousness. Some prophets also revealed God's Word through books of revelation. Source : http://islam.about.com/od/prophets/p/prophets.htm

Allah subhaanahu wa ta'aala says in the Holy quran
Surah 2 ayah 285
"The Messenger (Muhammad ) believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. They say, "We make no distinction between one another of His Messengers" - and they say, "We hear, and we obey. (We seek) Your Forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return (of all)."

There is entire chapter in the Holy Qur'an called Suratul Anbiya(The prophets)
English translation of Suratul Anbiyaa(The prophets)
